Rewriting Detroit’s Comeback Story
A collaboration with Invest Detroit and LISC brought attention to neighborhood progress
The Brief
Invest Detroit and LISC (Local Initiatives Support Corporation) work together to support equitable development in Detroit’s neighborhoods, financing housing, commercial revitalization and small-business corridors. Yet public understanding of Detroit’s “comeback” remained focused primarily on downtown. This misconception minimized the impact of neighborhood investment and risked reinforcing a narrative of unequal or incomplete progress. The goal was to broaden the story to reflect the full scope of community-driven revitalization across the city.
Our Strategy
VVK PR + Creative developed a neighborhood-specific media and visibility approach designed to bring attention to progress on the ground. Rather than promoting development from afar, we made neighborhoods themselves the storytelling source.
Our Work
The strategy included:
- Coordinating ribbon cuttings, groundbreakings and milestone events that marked visible, local progress
- Developing narratives rooted in resident voices, small business growth and community identity
- Hosting journalists on-site, allowing them to see and experience developments firsthand
- Timing announcements across multiple neighborhoods to build sustained recognition and momentum
The Impact
- Misconceptions shifted: media and stakeholder conversations now reflect Detroit’s citywide revitalization, not just downtown
- 11 neighborhoods are now formally included in the strategic investment fund
- Development progress is more widely recognized as community-led and partnership-driven
The narrative surrounding Detroit’s revitalization is increasingly more accurate, more inclusive and more reflective of the people shaping it.
