Turning Vision into a Statewide Conversation

A strategic communications program helped Detroit Future City launch its 2030 Vision and shape Detroit’s economic future.

The Brief

Detroit’s recovery has often been measured by visible development and investment. Yet beneath those indicators lies a more consequential question: how does growth translate into lasting economic opportunity for Detroit residents—particularly Detroit’s African American middle class?

Detroit Future City (DFC) was created to tackle that question through research, strategy and action. As the organization prepared to launch its 2030 Vision for Detroit, a comprehensive framework outlining strategies for equitable economic growth, it needed a communications approach that could elevate a complex policy document into a clear, compelling public narrative. The goal was to ensure the Vision resonated with policymakers, funders, community leaders and residents alike—without diluting its rigor or credibility.

Our Strategy

VVK PR + Creative developed and led an integrated communications strategy that translated data-driven policy into accessible storytelling. The approach balanced thought leadership with clarity, ensuring DFC’s recommendations were both understandable and influential.

Key elements included:

  • Strategic message development to distill complex economic analysis into clear, audience-specific narratives
  • Coordinated media briefings with key business, policy and civic journalists
  • Executive positioning to reinforce DFC’s leadership role in shaping Detroit’s economic future
  • Visual storytelling through a flagship 2030 Vision video
  • Ongoing digital, social and newsletter campaigns tailored to distinct stakeholder groups

The Work

VVK managed the full rollout of the 2030 Vision, aligning earned media, owned channels and visual assets into a cohesive launch moment. The 2030 Vision video became a central storytelling tool, supporting presentations to funders, policymakers and community audiences while reinforcing the credibility of DFC’s research.

The Impact

  • Major feature coverage in Crain’s Detroit Business
  • Broad awareness of the 2030 Vision as a guiding framework for Detroit’s economic development
  • Strengthened recognition of DFC as a trusted, influential voice on equity, growth and urban policy

Through sustained communications leadership, VVK continues to support DFC’s role as a nationally respected “think and do tank” shaping conversations about Detroit’s future.
