Building The Alternative Foundation’s Grantmaking Strategy & Infrastructure

A hands-on strategy and operations partnership that transformed The Alternative Foundation from a vision-led funder into a structured, impact-driven grantmaking organization.

Overview

The Alternative Foundation came to VVK with a clear sense of purpose but without the operational structure needed to fully bring that purpose to life. The foundation, which is based outside of Boston, was committed to supporting community rooted, equity‑driven work in Detroit, yet its internal systems were still operating without structure and process alignment. As its giving priorities evolved from placemaking in one community to demographic giving across southeast Michigan, they needed a unified grantmaking strategy, a consistent application and reporting process and a refreshed website to communicate the foundation’s mission or showcase the impact of its grantees.

The Strategy

VVK reimagined its approach to help build the foundation’s operational backbone while also shaping its long-term philanthropic strategy.

Key elements

  • Designing a Clear, ValuesAligned Grantmaking Strategy: This collaborative process produced a focused, values aligned strategy that now guides every funding decision.
  • Building the Infrastructure for Scalable, Professional Grantmaking: VVK established the systems and tools needed for a modern foundation, including a standardized application, clarified funding guidelines and a balanced reporting framework. A centralized grantee database now supports consistent decision‑making and smooth grant cycles.
  • Conducting Deep Research to Build a Strong Grantee Pipeline: VVK mapped Detroit’s nonprofit landscape, identifying high‑impact organizations aligned with the foundation’s mission. Through interviews, site visits, and monthly media coverage briefs, VVK built a robust pipeline of current and future grantee prospects.
  • Serving as the Foundation’s DetroitBased Program Manager: VVK continues to act as the foundation’s on‑the‑ground representative—meeting with community leaders, attending events, supporting grantees and providing real-time insight into emerging needs.

The Work

The foundation needed more than a consultant. It needed a partner who could help articulate its philanthropic identity, build the infrastructure to support it, and serve as its on‑the‑ground presence in Detroit. VVK stepped in to design the strategy, build the systems and manage the relationships that would allow the foundation to operate with clarity and credibility. VVK partnered with The Alternative Foundation across multiple workstreams, functioning as both strategist and hands‑on operator.

  • VVK worked with the foundation’s founder to refine the core elements of its grantmaking approach—priority issue areas, funding criteria, grant structures, and expectations for engagement and reporting.
  • VVK overhauled the foundation’s website with clearer messaging, more vibrant imagery, a stronger articulation of mission, and a redesigned structure for grantee stories.
  • The team developed new case studies that highlight community impact and the foundation’s role, while a streamlined “Apply for Funding” section aligns with the updated grantmaking process.
  • Developed, designed, and distributed a comprehensive white paper which explored lessons learned through intensive place-based giving operations in the McDougall Hunt neighborhood.
  • Organized and coordinated several multi-day immersive visits for the foundation’s founder to meet face to face with current grantees, scheduled meetings with key Detroit stakeholders, and set up opportunities to have conversations with prospective grantees.

The Impact

  • A robust pipeline of more than 15 Detroit‑based organizations to be considered for funding
  • A clear, repeatable process for reviewing and judging grant requests, grant applications, and biannual reporting
  • A professional, mission‑aligned website that communicates the foundation’s identity and showcases 6 grantee case studies
  • An additional 5 Detroit-based organizations receiving support

VVK’s partnership helped The Alternative Foundation to take a powerful vision into a more structured grant-making program focused on outcomes and impact. Most importantly, the foundation became better equipped to invest in long‑term, community‑driven change and gained the clarity, structure, and local insight needed to fulfill its mission with confidence.
